Temasek Foundation Learning

The TF LEaRN SMU x UGM Summer Course is a four-week program funded by the Temasek Foundation to invite students from both Singapore and Indonesia to learn about each other’s cultures and lifestyles. Throughout the Summer Course program’s Indonesian part, participants met with significant stakeholders in Indonesia, experienced socializing with the local people in local villages, played some traditional games, such as Bakiak, Enggrang, Dakon, etc., and visited several famous tourist sites in Yogyakarta, for example, Mount Merapi to ride a jeep tour. Not only were they given a chance to explore Indonesian culture, but the students also sat in classes taught by UGM lecturers regarding Indonesian social, economic, and political culture. In general, we can say that the program is also the production of a fruitful collaboration between Singapore Management University and the University of Gadjah Mada. Last, Temasek Foundation also gave scholarships to the participants to ensure they would reach their highest potential and reach their basic needs while enjoying the programs. Sharon, one of the participants from SMU, thought that the program was an immersive experience because this was her first time to be abroad. She also said that in the lectures, there was a good balance of social, economic, and political views both in Asia and Indonesia itself. Her favorite activities were company visits and other tours while forging cross-cultural friendships with some of the committee and students.
